Filed under: American Idol , Features Now 10 seasons in, ‘American Idol’ has had its fair share of innovators — those willing to risk it all and sing outside the box. And while some Idols’ inventive interpretations took too many artistic liberties with the source material, (Tim Urban’s ‘Under My Thumb,’ anyone?) others found putting a fresh spin an old classic set them apart from their ‘Idol’ also-rans. Here’s our picks for ‘American Idol”s top 10 freshest performances and a look back at how these big gambles changed the ‘Idol’ game

Yep, it was the end of the road for Tim Urban and his devoted followers, the “Turbanites,” last night, as the 20-year-old Texan was voted off ‘American Idol’ after surprising many viewers by making it all the way to the Top 7. His delightful smile, his gracious behavior when facing criticism from the judges and his general genial ‘tude were the big topics when Urban answered questions in today’s weekly post-’Idol’ exit press conference.

Filed under: Features , Fans , Hot Topics Tim Urban , the whimsical innocent with a style all his own, wasn’t even supposed to make it to the big stage this season on ‘American Idol.’ His presence alone was a fluke, after the surprise disqualification of another contestant in the eleventh hour, and it seems that even the judges don’t like him at times. Last week, Urban sang ‘I Can’t Help (Falling in Love with You)’ by Elvis Presley , and if you still can’t fall in love with Tim, I have to ask, “Why?” He is one of the few contestants in the bunch who has continued to climb, while marching to the beat of his own drum — and what’s not to love about that?

Filed under: Hot Topics , Poll Could Tim Urban be ‘Idol’s’ longest-running worst contestant yet? Should Urban survive this week — which seems likely after not even grazing the bottom two last week — he’d make it to seventh place on the show, rivaling even the infamous Sanjaya Malakar . Malakar, notorious for never hitting a correct note , causing fangirls to sob and adopting some tragic, jutting hairstyles , inspired much ire after making it all the way to seventh place on season 6 despite much viewer hatred and judge exasperation

It was a night verging on musical blasphemy as the remaining Top 9 ‘American Idol’ contestants performed songs from the John Lennon / Paul McCartney songbook, with an over-the-top, theatrical rendition of ‘Eleanor Rigby’ by Michael Lynche, a cover of ‘Come Together’ by Crystal Bowersox with an inexplicable backing didgeridoo, and a performance of ‘Hey Jude’ by Lee DeWyze featuring bagpipes. One singer, albeit an unlikely one, stood out, though.

This week, Tim Urban made history by becoming Vote for the Worst’s longest-running pick ever, with an impressive (?) seven-week run. (Yes, he’s even outlasted the site’s previous record holder, Sanjaya Malakar.) The site, which launched in 2004, quite simply chooses a contestant whom it think is the “worst” and then votes for them with the hope that they’ll make it to the next round. Past VFTW favorites include Megan Joy (season 9), Kristy Lee Cook (season 7) and, yes, even Jennifer Hudson, who was the site’s inaugural pick back in season 3.
